A Statement of Purpose

(from the first issue of The QUARTERLY, an official Society publication)

"With this first issue of The QUARTERLY, the Craighead County Historical Society, seeks its official acceptance in the minds of serious and interested students of local history.

"Publication of The QUARTERLY has been a long-desired objective of many local citizens. For years folk tales as well as true stories of historical incidents have been current in the county, but as the older citizens have died, many of them have been forever lost.

"Another reason for the need of such a publication is that of seeking and of setting into a semi-permanent form the history of at least a part of northeast Arkansas. One of the disappointments which meet the student of history in this section of the state is the discovery of a "blind spot" as far as recorded happenings are concerned. Harry Lee Williams published his History of Craighead County in 1930 and the editor published The Story of Craighead County in 1960. Neither book could contain the wealth of history and folklore that are a part of our County history. 'This publication will seek to begin where those writers left off, sometimes picking certain facts from them, and enlarging them as the information becomes available.

"The QUARTERLY will be only as interesting as the readers will help it to be. Without a doubt there are hundreds of persons in and out of Craighead County who know certain true facts of history of this region. If you are one of them, please tell your information to the editor. It does not need to be in the form of a finished article. Simply state the facts and the editor will put them together into a story. It is our sincere hope that many fellow-citizens will "get into the act" of making The QUARTERLY authentic, factual, and most of all, very interesting to read.

The Purposes of the Society, as stated in its bylaws are:

" ... to bring together those people interested in history, and especially in the history of Craighead County ... to discover and collect any material which may help to illustrate the history of the area ... (to) provide for the preservation of such material and for its accessibility, as far as may be feasible, to all who wish to examine or study it .... "
